Snorkie Musing: Are you my Yorkie Mama? Part II

 

Sunday is Mothers Day! I want to wish all the Human Mamas a Happy Mother’s Day!

As I said in the Part I blog, all this Mothers day stuff has gotten me wondering about my roots. I’ve explored the possibility of a Schnauzer Mama, now it’s time to look at the Yorkie Mama idea.

So let’s compare my Snorkieness with Yorkiness!

This little guy has a cute black nose. My nose is a bit bigger.

His ears are very perky too. I have floppy ears.

However, we both have wonderful silky and

LUMINOUS white hair.

Look at how my hair just gleams!

This Golden Yorkshire terrier has some gleaming hair too.

Very shiny and what a nice bow! And a nice little beard to go with it!

I’d chew up any bow Mama put on me!

And I seem to have a naturally

wavy hair.

Once upon a time, Mama tried to dress me up with a Bandana, but…

I chewed it off. By the way, see how wavy my hair is.

Are Yorkies ever this wavy?

That doesn’t seem to be a strong wave. But we do have similar expressions.

Their snouts look a tiny bit like mine. And look! Here’s a Yorkie with floppy ears.

Looks like Yorkies have ears that go up and down.

Looks like they have silky hair and slightly wavy hair too!

We do have similar expressions, but maybe that’s just being a

TERRIER!

The one thing that boggles my mind is … well … size.

Miniature Schnauzers can weigh between 12- 20 pounds.

I weigh 20 pounds. I am NOT overweight! (I only have treats every once in a while)

Yorkshire Terriers can weigh up to 7 pounds.

That’s a mighty big gap.

I’m just a young dog, not a dog breeder, so I don’t know if it makes sense for such a tiny doggy mama to carry big schnauzer puppies. Maybe all the puppies are tiny enough at the beginning.

Here are some tiny little Yorkie puppies and their Yorkie Mama.

This little yorkie guy is one hour old.

(Mama says that Gregory’s hamster was bigger when it was 2 years old)

But Schnauzer puppies don’t seem much bigger.

Well I suppose anything is possible. These guys don’t look that much bigger, right?

I love playing with both Yorkies and mini schnauzers in the park!

I guess it doesn’t really matter who my doggy mama was! I hope she’s happy healthy and loved wherever she is.

She doesn’t have to worry about me. I’m in a good place. My human family loves me just as much as she must have loved me when I was born. I’ll be with them forever and ever.  I love them a whole, whole, whole lot!

Snorkie Musing – Who was my Doggy Mama? Schnauzer or Yorkie Part I

Mother’s day is this Sunday. Around here my hu-brothers and my dad are keeping secrets from Mama. I think she’s going to get some presents on Mother’s day. I know she’s going to get some sort of brunch somewhere. I wish I could go. But if I know Mama, she’ll bring me something yummy back. I’m still having pieces of that Canadian bacon in my dinner and breakfast since Mama’s birthday breakfast on Wednesday. Yummy! I wonder what she’ll bring me on Sunday.

I vote for the steak place!

As much as I love my Mama, on Mother’s Day I can’t help thinking about my doggy Mama too.

I was just a little fellow when I got taken away.

I’ve been wondering if she was a Schnauzer mama or Yorkie mama.

I’m the same size as a mini schnauzer, but much bigger than a Yorkshire terrier. If you want to see great pictures and videos of mini schnauzers and white schnauzers, in particular, you should visit my friends Santa and Minnie at their blog, I am Santa a Miniature Schnauzer.

I started surfing the net to see look at all sorts of pictures of white schnauzers. I’ve got some pictures for comparison. You guys, tell me what you think?

By the way, this is Part 1 of the blog. I decided to compare myself to some white schnauzers first and then I’ll look at Yorkies in the next blog!

Part I

Are you my Schnauzer Mama?

Here’s a white schnauzer wearing a red t- shirt.

Do you see the resemblance? He’s got a nice big black nose like mine!

We have the same floppy ears and I have more hair on my tail, but it’s the same shape and length.

Here’s a white schnauzer puppy. I used to have a toy like that.

Of course, I destroyed it! Gee he sure looks like me!

Of course, they all have Schnauzer haircuts. Oh and somebody docked their tails.

I still have ALL my parts (well, almost all of them…whimper…I’ll never be a Daddy. )

He’s nice and shaggy like me! Funny that they let him in at all.

Isn’t that a little “schnauzerish”?

This is a miniature white schnauzer with the full on hair do.

Look at our tails and our legs. I’ll admit, I don’t have the hairdo, but come on!

Okay, I’m convinced that I am definitely from some parent that’s a white schnauzer.

I like to imagine myself snuggling for milk with my doggy brothers and sisters.

It’s anybody’s guess!

Am I really part Yorkie?

Hi All!  Opie here!

I went to a new dog park today. My mom will blog about that later.  I met a Yorkshire Terrier for the first time .  Her name was Teddy and she was wearing a pink polka dot dress.  My mom told me that maybe my real doggy mom or my doggy daddy was a yorkie.

Take  a look at this picture.

Teddy is in her pink dress. I don't know the other yorkie.

I look like a giant dog compared to Teddy!  I don’t know much about the birds and the bees, but does this seem odd to you? I just can’t picture it.

Teddy was very nice, by the way. She has a funny little bark that sounds a little like a squirrel’s chattering.  Her dress was very interesting.  Mom was watching me very closely at the park. I think she was afraid that I’d pick Teddy up and chew on her.  I’ll admit, she did look a lot like one of Michael’s stuffed animals, and I like to chew on them a bit.  Teddy actually looked more like a squirrel, but the squirrels in my yard are a bit bigger.

I imagine that if Teddy ran into a squirrel in my yard I’d have to defend her from it.  The squirrel might beat her up, and of course, I’d have to save her. I could be a real hero.  Teddy would really look up to me. Well, she has to look up to me now anyway because she’s so tiny.  I think I’d like to have a Yorkie sister like Teddy.  I wonder how high she can jump?

My real question is this — Am I really part Yorkie?   I’m not that small. I weigh21 pounds and I can jump really high.  I’m not the biggest dog in the small dog side of the dog park, but I’m not that small.  Teddy has pretty long brown and grey hair. I have white and grey hair with some brown bits thrown in.  Teddy seems to like her pink dress.  I think I’ll chew up anything that Mom puts on me, no matter how many treats she gives me.  One of the men in the park asked how much Teddy eats.  Teddy’s mom said that she eats 8 kibble pieces twice a day.  I’d bite somebody if that’s all I got fed. I’d have to supplement my diet with a finger or two.  We are so different!

What do you think?  Do we look at all alike?  They told Mom I was part Schnauzer and Yorkie.  I can see the Schnauzer in myself, but the Yorkie.  I just can’t see it.  I’m just too big!

What the heck is a Snorkie, anyway?

I don't know if Opie's hair will ever get that long, or if I'll let it! Hippy dog!

A Snorkie is a cross between a Yorkie and a Schnauzer.  To understand Opie’s character a little better – his hatred of squirrels, birds, hiss incessant need to track, track, track —  I decided to do a little research on his breeding.

This is not Opie! This is a snorkie named Einstein. Wow, they could be twins.

 

Here is what I found.

On the Yorkie side of the family this is what we get.

Not surprisingly, Yorkies are from the British Isles. They were brought to Yorkshire by Scottish workers. The British dog snobs say they were bred by common people, and that’s why they know so little about them.  There’s some folderol about this dog and that dog being the originators of the breed, but that’s dull and uninteresting to me. What is interesting is that Yorkies have always been thought of as brave little dogs. They are described as “bold and active.”  The article goes on to say “that the Yorkshire terrier is active,  loves attention, very overprotective and should not show the soft temperament seen in lap dogs.”  I am not too sure I know what they mean by the  “lap dog” temperament.  I followed the link and they defined lap dog as a small dog able to be held in the lap that has no working function other than that of a docile companion.  Well, I’ll say this. Opie is definitely not too small and not that docile.  He does fit on my lap, but he’d rather lie on the couch next to me. Teacup Yorkie. I think Opies Mom or Dad must have been on the big side. I just can't picture it.

Of course, we all know what Yorkies look like, their distinctive dark brown, grey coats.  Silky smooth seems to be the common grooming doggie do for these cute little doggies.  They have a host of interesting genetic characteristics.   Delicate stomachs and skin allergies seem to be most prominent among them.  Opie does have a delicate stomach. There’s no doubt about that.  However, so far we don’t have any skin issues, especially since we dealt with the flea issue.  A pure bred Yorkie seems to be a good little pup. Did I mention they are also hypoallergenic?  You’d thing with all that hair they’d be an allergy sufferers nightmare, but not so.  I might not have minded a Yorkie  — however, the boys wanted a bigger dog, not so delicate.

Okay now let’s talk about the Schnauzer side of the family.

Well, this seems to be where all of Opie’s hunting instincts come from. Schnauzers were bred to be ratting dogs. They are originally from German.y (Wow, big surprise!)  They have a great temperament — Alert, friendly, obedient, anxious to please and neither too timid nor too aggressive.  This makes sense. Opie is an alert little fellow, and for the most part, he will sit when told to sit. He does love to please us, and I wouldn’t say he’s too timid.  The research also states that Schnauzers are territorial and protective. They were bred not only to ferret out rodents but also to protect children, and guard the family farm.  I’ll say yes to all of that. Opie is territorial, that’s for sure.  You can easily translate read his bark to strangers on the porch — Who are you? Get off my porch. Yes MY PORCH, Get off, Get going! Schnell! Go! Go! Go!

I can often picture Opie walking a beat with a little night stick in his mouth and a tazer strapped to his little waist. “Burglers, squirrels and mailmen — beware! I’ve got teeth and I know how to use them!”   On his morning walk he glues his nose to the pavement until he runs into a tree and a squirrel perched in the upper branches. Then I have to haul on the leash to get him back in gear.   We’re still working on his loose leash walking. He has good days and  “meh” days.

Schnauzers need a lot of socialization with people and animals so that they don’t go nuts.  That’s probably why Opie loves the dog park so much, and why we feel compelled to give him at least two good walks during the day. He actually gets three, but the mid day one is really just a potty run.  Schnauzers  are active dogs who will “make their own fun” if they aren’t given good activity and stimulation.   Does Opie make his own fun? 

Mama: Opie did you make your own fun in the house today while we were out?

Opie: Well Mama. I saw my leash in the top of the basket, and there was all this other interesting stuff in it, and I jumped and it all fell down and went boom. And since it was all on the floor anyway… Your book didn’t’ taste that good, but I found candy wrappers under the boys’ bed and I thought you said that those sandals hurt your feet and why does your desk have so many books and papers piled up? They block my view of the window and I had to take them down and, I lost my bully stick! And  Did you know that Gregory left a French fry on the dining room table? And you locked the trashcan again!

Yes, I guess I did make my own fun, but you were gone for days, and days and weeks and weeks and months and months and years and years….[ At this point, puppy dog eyes come into play]

Mama: Opie we were gone for 20 minutes.

Does Opie make his own fun?  Yep!

Opie can’t help the way he is! It’s in his genes. However, it seems like he’s got some great characteristics from both breeds that we can certainly admire.

He’s loyal.

 He’s protective, and he likes to play and be active.

We can work with all of that.  He can’t help his hatred of rodents.  I’m not that fond of them myself. ( Nasty disease carrying little creatures!)  He’s got a few hundred years of this hatred  imprinted into his genetic code. Hey, it’s nature!

Bottom line —  he’s our little Snorkie and we love him!
